  In industrial production, steel grit rust removal is a common surface treatment process. The consistency and uniformity of its effect are crucial for subsequent processes such as painting and welding.   As the main abrasive for sandblasting rust removal, steel grit has high hardness and good toughness, and can effectively remove rust and oxide scale on the metal surface. The characteristics of steel grit such as particle size, shape and chemical composition directly affect the rust removal effect.

  (1) Particle size selection: The particle size of steel grit should be selected according to the material and surface condition of the workpiece to be processed. Generally speaking, coarser steel grit is suitable for removing thick rust layers and large-area rust removal, while finer steel grit is suitable for fine surface treatment and removal of thin rust layers. For example, when processing large steel structures, steel grit with a particle size of 0.8-1.5mm can be selected; for small precision parts, steel grit with a particle size of 0.3-0.6mm can be selected.

  (2) Shape and hardness: The shape of steel grit should be angular or beaded so that it can produce uniform roughness during the sandblasting process, which is beneficial to the subsequent coating process. Its hardness should be moderate, which can effectively remove rust without causing excessive wear to the substrate. Generally, the microhardness of steel grit is between 390HV-710HV.

  (3) Chemical composition: The chemical composition of steel grit should meet the requirements of relevant standards to ensure that it will not have adverse effects on the metal surface during use. For example, the sulfur and phosphorus content in steel grit should be controlled at a low level to avoid corrosion to the metal.
